Visual Treasures

This program will create a publicly accessible, web-based and fully searchable image catalog documenting cultural and social history in images. The site will allow for a variety of interactive functions. This five year project (January 2000-2004) will describe and digitize 600,000 images culled from The New York Public Library, Research Libraries' collection strengths in the Humanities, Performing Arts, and Science including maps, photographs, prints, manuscripts, and some text. Images are to be released and served on a continual basis as conversion work is completed. An initial group of 5,000 images is to be available by January 2001. The following images are samples of several collections.
