Notes: Printed on border: "The advantages of using steamers as whalers are so many that probably we shall soon see sailing vessels entirely superseded. The above picture shows a harpooner in the act of firing a harpoon from a gun especially constructed for the purpose. To the end of the harpoon a stout rope is attached, which uncoils as the weapon flies to the mark while the struck fish is diving, and which serves to haul the whale, when dead, alongside the vessel."
