Notes: Printed on border: "The subject of Frontier Defence must ever be a vital one to Continental Powers. France in particular has five different nations pressing on her borders, and two of them -- Germany and Italy -- require the most attention. Our picture represents a detachment of the French Mountain Battery hoisting mules up a precipice. Difficulties and delays such as this are naturally very common in such districts. The whole work is of extreme danger, as at any minute, without warning, an avalanche may bury the whole party, or while on their marches they may be precipitated down a deep ravine which has been partially covered with snow : such occurrences are very frequent."
