Notes: Printed on border: " 'The poor fellows died nobly -- not a sigh, nor murmur, nor sign of fear was betrayed by any of them. Their brave commander, Colonel Crittenden, of Kentucky, met his fate like a soldier. On being t[old] to turn his back and kneel, he heroically replies: 'No! I never turn my back to the enemy, and kneel only to my God!' " Written on mount: "Colonel Crittenden, American veteran of the Mexican War and filibuster, is shot for leading soldiers in the revolutionary Cuban army of general Narciso Lopez, 1850- (execution took place in the Plaza Major, Havana)."
