| Notes: | Printed on border: "It is said that one hundred and fifty Cuban patriots were executed at this place in a single day, by volleys from Spanish rifles. The marks of the bullets are plainly visible in the wall. Every city in Cuba has some such gruesome place as this, monuments to the long and determined struggle of the people for freedom. It will gratify the reader to know that the soldier in the photograph was not executed; he merely posed for our artist." |
