[Emile] Zola, several officers rushed to the balcony of the court and shouted down the word 'Guilty!' to the expectant crowd below. It was the signal for a wild demonstration. Enthusiasms grew to fever-heat, and when at length the officers began to leave the Salle du Harlay they were greeted with deafening cries of 'Vive l'armée!' 'A bas Zola!'
