For centuries comedians have kept private notebooks of jokes and gags they find amusing and useful. The first one to be published was Joe Miller's Joke Book which appeared in the eighteenth century. Here is an example from late in the following century probably used by an itinerant American vaudevillian. Although the language has changed, many of the basic jokes remain the same. |
