Film is an art of the twentieth century. The first movies for general public consumption were one-reelers shown in nickelodeons, but by 1912 feature films began their domination of the market. Often shown between
shows in vaudeville, they soon came to command their own theatres. One of the greats of silent film is D. W. Griffiths' Broken Blossoms (1919) starring Lillian Gish and Richard Barthlemess.
